Back Creek Pottery is located in southwestern Montana in the historic town of Philipsburg. In September, 2014, we relocated from the mountains of North Carolina to Montana to be closer to our kids and grandkids. The mountains of North Carolina and Montana and the history surrounding both areas are the inspiration for my designs and glazes. While most of my pots are functional in nature, I occasionally sway from the norm and make pottery mushrooms and gnomes for the garden, pottery birdhouses, and my popular "biker birdhouses" which are birdhouses with exaggerated faces, do-rags, a few scars and an occasional missing tooth. While many of the biker birdhouses never leave the house, they are made to be used outside for the birds to nest in, if they dare! Each biker birdhouse is signed and numbered. I only make a limited number each year.
In late September, 2014, we opened our pottery shop at 147 W. Broadway Avenue in downtown Philipsburg, Montana. Philipsburg is an historic, late 19th century mining town. The buildings on Broadway and surrounding areas have been well preserved and painted to keep with the theme of what once was a thriving mining community. Many buildings, including the one our shop is in, are on the National Register of Historic Places. Strolling downtown has become popular with tourists and residents alike. Shops, gem mines and restaurants dot the streets and give Philipsburg the reputation of being a great place to spend the day. Philipsburg also boasts The Sweet Palace, one of the largest candy stores in the country. Make sure you pick up a "Philipsburg Territory", a local publication, showing the many things to do in our area, gives you a history of the town and a map for a walking tour of the historic buildings. Sunset Magazine voted Philipsburg the Best Municipal Makeover/Reinvented Town in the west. For more information on Philipsburg, the surrounding area and local events, visit www.philipsburgmt.com, the official site of the Philipsburg Chamber of Commerce or call us and we will send you the latest Philipsburg Territory, the official publication of the Philipsburg Chamber of Commerce. This publication is full of information on our town and the surrounding area with listings for local businesses, eateries, places to stay and things to do.
The Town of Philipsburg will be celebrating its Sesquicentennial birthday, that's 150 years, this June, 2017. Follow us on Facebook for updates to events and festivities.
